Hello blog land!  Just wanted to invite all of you to join me at the Southern Fried Exhibit opening on Friday, October 2nd in Castleberry Hill.  See below for more details on the exhibit and on the Atlanta Photography Exhibit (APE) gang.  The mission of APE is to promote the photographic arts through exhibitions and education.  They provide a launching pad for photographers in establishing a presence in the Atlanta art community through non-juried exhibitions and education.  APE often incorporates programs that give back to the community.  You can learn more about APE by clicking here.

About a month or so ago I met fellow photographer Steven Skelton at a mixer at Zack Arias‘s studio.  Since meeting we have kept in touch, chatted on Facebook, followed each other’s work, and now have had the chance to shoot together!  Steven put together a strobist group in Athens, Georgia (Go Dawgs) and they had their first meeting at the Oneta Building on the outskirts of town.  Strobist style shooting just basically means shooting with off camera flash and can give you some really cool effects.  Most of these shots were done with my 580EXII flash and a 60 inch umbrella to soften the light.

Thanks so much to my dear friend Renee for joining us as a model……she was a total trooper.  She’s probably feeling like she has whiplash from a car crash after we made her flip her hair over about 15 times to get this shot…….

Most recently he’s portrayed Buddy Holly and received rave reviews. Before that he was Hank Williams.  He’s a regular at the Theatrical Outfit, Theatre on the Square, The Back Alley.  Honestly, when he asked if I would take some headshots on photos for him I was petrified.  He is so ridiculously talented…..I didn’t want to screw this up.

We love Rob to death and hope he remembers the little people when he makes it big…..not if, but when.  We love you Rob!

The concept is simple. Help others. Commit a selfless act. Get involved in your community. Give back.  This world wide movement was started by the ridiculously talented Jeremy Cowart and has spread like WILDFIRE!  Apparently, there are a LOT of you that want to give back to your community by participating.  Groups all over the world are organizing to provide free portraits at their community centers, parks, school, etc. on December 12th, 2009 to families that are less fortunate.

I’m a member of the Atlanta based planning committee and site leader for the Midtown Atlanta location.  We have partnered with Families First and already have 3 different locations in metro Atlanta, so we have lots of volunteer opportunities!  If you are a photographer (beginner or professional) in the Atlanta Metro area and would like to be involved in this project locally you can sign up here.  If you are not based in Atlanta, but would like to find out more information go to the main Help Portrait website here or follow the action on Twitter here.

Take a peek at the video below that got this all started!

I’ve been having a dee-light-ful relaxing weekend with my family up in Cashiers, NC. This place is heaven. It’s been in the mid 70’s during the day….sunny…..a gentle breeze rustling through the trees….it seriously doesn’t get much better than this. It’s been raining a lot here lately and there are mushrooms EVERYWHERE! Mushrooms of all colors shapes and sizes are everywhere you turn.

My mother and I rode our golf cart to the top of the mountain today to go “shroom hunting” and here are a few of the things we found along the way.
